Het doel van de stichting is evangelisatiewerk en tevens hulpverlening aan mensen in nood. De stichting richt zich in haar evangelisatiewerk op de reizigers van en nabij de grotere N.S.-stations en ook op anderen die in de omgeving daarvan ophouden, zoals verslaafden aan drugs en alcohol.
De naam "De Open Deur" verwijst naar Joh 10:9, waar Jezus zegt: "Ik ben de Deur; indien iemand door mij ingaat, die zal behouden worden; en hij zal ingaan en uitgaan en weide vinden".
